- JB Priestly

Exploring the Island

The undulating coastal footpath from Ventnor to St Lawrence passes Steephill Cove and the Botanic Garden. From St Lawrence to Niton, the path veers away from the sea to take you along the top of the inland cliff with fine views of the Undercliff below.

Priestly recognised the true essence of the island. You too will discover that the longer you stay, the more the island grows on you with its captivating landscapes and slow, relaxing pace of life.

If you come for a day, you will want to stay for at least a week and return again and again.

Footpath, bridleways and byways give free public access to almost every part of the Isle of Wight's diverse countryside and coast.

Walks

Your walks on the Isle of Wight with be remembered as stunning and breathtaking.

With an area of just 147 square miles, over 500 miles of carefully maintained and well signposted rights of way can be found on you travels of thatch and stone, ancient churches and manor house.

Beautiful leafy lanes wind their way from coast to coast through green valleys, meadows, forest and over downland.

Cycling

If cycling is something that you enjoy, you can follow a 62 mile route through some of the Island's best scenery, mainly using quieter lanes, signed with a white bike clockwise, and a blue bike anticlockwise.

You also have the opportunity to take a more demanding route using the well signposted bridleways and byways by mountain bike.

Horse Riding

There are great opportunities to explore the Island's vast network of bridleways, some of which have been in use since the Stone Age, when early man travelled along the central chalk ridge.

Enjoy the panoramic views from these high tracks used by droves, horsemen and carters, (long before our present roads were built) or a leisurely ride through ancient woodlands and sweet-scented meadows.
